Mind = blown: 'Prescription THUG$' documentary
This evening, I watched a mind blowing documentary on Netflix, Prescription THUG$. Chris Bell, the documentarian, covers the business of prescription drugs. It blew my mind on several levels - it's a must watch if whole-person health interests you in any way. Some of the mind blowing facts:
- Chris interviews a doctor from one of SoCal's most successful Rehab clinics. In the interview, the doc quotes a statistic that when OxyContin (a pain killer) became more tightly controlled (still has so far to go), its use dropped by 80%. In other words, 80% of people aren't using Oxy for its intended use. The fact that it was 80% was insane to me.
- Chris shows the chemical make up of OxyContin and it's base is the same as heroin. It's basically a 'legal' for of heroin. I knew both were opiates, but wow... a legal form of heroin. Those words hit me like a ton of bricks.
- Similar case with Ritalin and other ADD/ADHD drugs... they share the same make-up as Meth. Basically, we're pumping our kids with legal forms of Meth. And we're all slamming marijuana as a "gateway drug"??
- BIG business in prescription drugs. This one pisses me off to the nth degree - if for nothing else, watch the documentary to understand how corrupt it all is.
